When Fuji star Pasuma dabbled
into Hip-Hop music a few months ago and came out with an album many thought he
was crazy. What does this guy want from Hip-Hop with the resounding success he
had recorded in Fuji? But Pasuma has come out to explain that his entry into
the Hip-Hop genre is to help Fuji music and take it to the next level. Since many
Hip-Hop stars have infused Fuji into Hip-Hop why not the other way round? Last week,
Pasuma who recently won the Fuji Musician of the year Award at the recent City
People Entertainment Awards.in an interview with City People he spoke about how
he took the big plunge, whilst entirely leaving his Fuji genre.
How did your listening album go?
It was wonderful. I felt good. I give
thanks to God. I have been on this plan to do Hip-Hop for a long time. My manager
Afolabi Oyekoya, A021 Media came up with this idea, he said this is the right
timefor us to do this, and I agreed to do it, you can also see the outcome of
it all.
What are we to expect?
After this Hip-Hop album, the
next is to try and bring out a new Fuji artiste. We are planning to do a Fuji
competition. It’s been a while since we have seen a new Fuji artiste come out. So
we are trying to do a Fuji competition, maybe we can pick a new Fuji artiste
from there.
You now have a label?
Yes I do. I have my own label now,
called Wasbah Records. We are Francofre at the moment. We are trying to put
Quidot on it and Small Doctor with maybe 2 or 3 Fuji artiste later.
What made you go into Hip-Hop?
Because we wanted to diversify.
Diversity is very important to one’s life. That you are a Fuji musician does
not mean you can’t do something else. People still see it that this guy really
knows what he is doing and that he can do something nice. That is why we
diversified. Moreover, Hip-Hop is everywhere now, so we must embrace it. Fuji music
is just a strong music if not it would have been pushed out by Hip-Hop. Years
back people saw Fuji as gutter music that is no more. Then they use to say it
is a music of miscreant’s hoodlums. Nowadays, you can see the same people
dancing to Fuji music because K1 changed Fuji music and turned it to classical
music that people can dance to.
There is a shift now to Hip-Hop. The
music that is trending now is Hip-Hop. Everywhere, these days, it will be very
hard to go to a party now and not find a DJ on standby that has been invited to
come and play.
What are we to expect between now
and September?
We are pushing the video out. We have
like 4 Hip-Hop videos now and they are all enjoying massive airplay now. We are
trying to push more. Me and QDot and the one that I did with Olamide. That will
come out in December. We have a lot.
How many years have you been in
the industry?
I give thanks to God. I have been
in the industry for 31 years, since 1984 to be precise. When I did my first
record in 1993, I called it Recognition because I am looking forward for people
to recognise me in the industry as one of the Fuji artiste coming out. In 1995,
I did another one which is a follow up album called CHOICES because I knew that
there was a lot of Fuji musicians so if you want to take me as your choice this
is a new Fuji musician coming on the scene. That was before God now answered my
prayers, in 1997 when I did Orobokibo that gave me the fame I am into now.
So Orobokibo launched you out?
Yes, Orobokibo made me popular.it
was my defining album. I have spent 31 years in the industry, It’s not a joke.
What’s your success tips?
I pray a lot. I like people
becoming successful. I always like to help other people to become successful in
whatever they chose to do. If you are in need of my help, I will always be
there for you. I think maybe it’s the prayer and the help that I have been
doing and the work I have been doing with the help of my Manager who pushed me
to where I am today. Mostly its prayers. I believe in prayers so much.
Which do you prefer, Fuji or
Hip-Hop?
My Fuji is Fuji and Hip-Hop is
Hip-Hop, Fuji is my music, that’s my genre. That where I come from, but I enjoy
Hip-Hop because that is the music trending now. Just like the saying goes, if
you can’t beat them, you join them. That is what I happening now because it’s
trending. My joining Hip-Hop is basically to keep my Fuji music and my
colleagues in Fuji relevant and still intact. If the hip-hop people have taken Fuji
into hip-hop with their songs, why should we in Fuji sit back and watch them? Why
can’t we carry Fuji into hip-hop too by ourselves? That’s my mission.
